The state of my father's alma mater hurts my heart. Props to Dr. Blackburn and Eric Cowan for being uncharacteristically vocal.
Just because it feels like school is your entire life doesn't mean it's the only think you have to talk about.
Hey! Security guard sleeping on the first floor couch! And with the lights off? Bold move.
I would take a picture of you if I didn't think I'd face some kind of legal action. DISD already blocks our blog (only ours) on campus. If we started taking pictures of sleeping security guards, we might get a call from one of those lawyers that shows up to board briefings. Just got done blogging about DISD school environments and how that contributes to teachers taking frequent sick days and/or leaving the district all together, but safety is just as important. Sleeping security guards don't keep the building safe. When you have the police showing up to school looking for students breaking into houses and/or stealing cars (both true and recent events) maybe you should keep your head on a swivel instead of catching a few extra winks. Yes, I prefer your behavior to your predecessors that were asked to leave for inappropriately touching students, but less wrong is still wrong. Please correct your behavior. The problem is not that you have a bunch of employees that are lazy, the problem is people do not like teaching at your school. Similarly if you are dealing with multiple teachers quitting in the middle of the year, maybe you should spend some time reflecting on the environment at your school. Teachers do this job because they enjoy the work and it is meaningful. Take that away and you are not going to have many employees left. The environment is a huge part of teaching. We don’t reward teachers with the pay, but if we are going to ask teachers to work hard, we need to recognize and appreciate all they do. Shield them from some paperwork, have clear expectations, and plan a few social thank you events. It doesn’t take much, but it’s important, because teachers are missing for a reason.
What do you do when a class bombs the quiz? Talk about it and reset. Everyday is a new day.
Is there anything more infuriating than a kid blatantly turning in something they copied directly from the internet? What is cheating?
If you find that you are always angry, crying, struggling, or sad, talk to someone instead of feeling that way forever.
It's hard to expect students to say anything other than "I'm ok" when you don't equip them with the vocabulary to express themselves.
Last night Trustee Joyce Foreman assembled community members for a meeting in opposition to new charter schools in District 6. I was there. Very eye opening.
One of TV's best shows for teachers is back. Spoilers ahead if you haven't seen up through the season 3 premiere.
My student passed the STAAR and ran around in disbelief. Really touched my heart. Read more for the full story.
Trustee Eric Cowan won't be seeking another term which means the District 7 race will be wide open. We will miss you. Here's why.
Some days you wake up and just know today isn't going to be your day. What do you do next?
There are a ton of different types of teachers in classrooms across the country. Which one are you, and which do you want to be?
Parent teacher conferences done, first full week back done, and a well deserved three day weekend finally here! Nothing better than enjoying a lazy Saturday and catching up on what's going on.
