Did you know DISD wasn't officially recognized as desegregated until 2003? That's Black history.
I always hated Black History Month growing up because it reminded me of just how little people cared about me or my history 11 months out of the year. I was so bothered by it that I couldn't bring myself to enjoy the one month where people pretended to care. I like it more now that I'm a teacher because I have more control over the dialogue around this month and what it means.
The biggest request of all teachers is to use this month as an opportunity to let your students know that there were more people involved in The Civil Rights Movement than MLK. Teach them that black people didn't just start doing things worthy of note in the 1950s. You are entrusted with something very precious and influential, knowledge. Do your part to help our students see more than they've gotten in the past. Show them something new. I love Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but one lesson about him once a year wasn't near enough to hold my attention as a student. Spice it up teachers.
