A Dallas Education Blog by Young Dallas Teachers
Black students are getting suspended at a higher rate than other students. This isn’t news. This has been going on for quite some time in DISD and elsewhere. Why is it still a topic of discussion in Dallas ISD? Because we can’t find the fix or don’t want to make the hard choices? I think it’s a bit of both, but as a district and a country we have to start making the difficult choices. It's a problem that extends far beyond the classroom and we need to start finding new (or old) ways to be successful. Being culturally responsive in Dallas ISD could be a game changer, but not if we don’t teach our black students how to function outside of their schools. A mixture of respect, understanding, and discipline could be a recipe for success, but let’s see if our leaders are ready to make that jump. No more task forces. It’s time for some real action. We’ve talked enough.
