I asked if she wanted to sit in my classroom while she got herself together and she said yes. She cried and said she didn't want to talk and I told her I'd sit with her and would listen when she got ready. Eventually she spilled the beans. She wasn't getting the attention she wanted from her boyfriend and on top of that is taking care of her Grandmother and several small children because her mom is in jail. There are double digit people living in her house and she's not getting any sleep; additionally, she can't do the extra curricular activities she wants because she's so busy doing everything else. She's currently doing a puzzle I made and I'm teaching her history for fun.
Main point? Don't forget that our kids have things going on in their lives that influence their behavior. Some days you aren't in the mood. I get it. Just take that extra second to give them the benefit of the doubt sometimes.
