As a Dallas resident and parent, the quality of our public schools is a key issue for my family. DISD serves almost 160,000 students who will become the foundation of Dallas’ success . . . or its failure. Our city’s economy, culture, and government will live or die by the quality of the talent that our public schools provide to our business, non-profit, and local leadership pipelines.
I have watched the DISD District 2 race closely. I am concerned with what is actually at stake — our students. Unfortunately, Lori Kirkpatrick has made this race about empty words, not our schools or the students within them. In the last few years, DISD has seen progressive, pragmatic policies and practices implemented to encourage the recruitment and retention of great teachers and school leaders. These policies put students first in education and increase transparency and accountability. We have seen the results.
District 2 Trustee Dustin Marshall has been a champion of these policies. He is the keystone in keeping the progress gained in DISD and insuring further progress for the good of our students. Since becoming a trustee, Dustin has:
- Led efforts to introduce competition and accountability into DISD's transportation contract with Dallas County Schools;
- Revised the Transfer & Affidavit policies to address overcrowding in our schools;
- Held semi-weekly office hours and worked with a Parent Advisory Council to get input from the community and parents of students; and
- Supported the expansion of the ACE program to help our most troubled schools, which as removed many off the state “improvement required” list over the last 18 months.
I believe Dustin Marshall will continue to support the build-out of best practices and support for DISD. That is what DISD needs now, and that is what Dallas’ future depends on.
