Classes function how you allow them to function. Sure, there are always outliers that do what they want no matter what, but most students stay between the lines you draw and maintain for them. This week, my kids are doing the same thing I always allowed them to do but now it's bothering me. Nobody to blame but myself.
How did I resolve it? Talking to them. "I know this is how class usually works. You aren't doing anything wrong. This week we need to do something differently. Not feeling great and can't keep up with you like I usually do." They understand. Usually, the way class works is fun for everyone, but if I'm falling down unable to focus and harness that energy, it becomes detrimental.
Doing things their way is a good thing. Making education work for you is a skill that is essential for success. Sometimes it just doesn't work for me or for them. That's when you have to shift gears.
