You get to learn a lot from these moments even if they are frustrating.
“Why don’t these parents love their kids” I used to think angrily before I stopped being such a self righteous know it all dummy. The longer I thought about it and talked with the kids, you realize what you already knew in your heart, the parents have other priorities that force the division of attention with their child.
Sometimes it's working late or working multiple jobs. Other times, it is multiple children. That was certainly the case for one of my sophomores with a mother under thirty and 5 siblings.
Rather than sitting there being angry, this is a great chance to learn a little. Talking to the children, I learned all of the reasons their parents were late. I also learned which had parents that are always late for no reason. The sad thing is that there are some kids with adults that don't have a connection to them.
A retired coach once told me that they told all the parents that if they aren't there within an hour, they'd call the police station and say the child was abandoned. Extreme, but the coach didn't have pickup issues after they did that a few times. I guess there's more than one way to "solve" a problem.
