History is always more fun when you can talk to someone that was there.
While there aren't very many people anymore that remember WWI, we are entering that section of the TEKS where the record keeping is better and includes high quality photographs. I've found that the kids sink into it a little better when they feel an increased connection to the material.
Teaching about the ancient world is my favorite, but it's challenging because of the need to create a reference point in modernity to really create deep and lasting understanding of the material. WWI is something the kids have heard about before, they have a higher level of comfort with it, and that provides a unique opportunity for discussion. Here through the end of the year if fun for that reason. I always look forward to it.
I'm having them read independently then share with a partner followed by discussion. They're loving it.
