I've put together a small worksheet as their do now where they are assessing the situation using a map followed by two readings that explain both that incident and the Bay of Pigs invasion. We are following that with class discussion of both events and then as a reward for finishing all of their work for the day we are watching a duck and cover video from the 50s. Where does this turn into chaos?
I may have challenged all of my students to flash their phone lights at each other during the day and to immediately duck and cover whenever they see the flash. Is this going to drive some of their teachers crazy? Absolutely, but it will make me laugh and, darn it, that's important. The kids are having fun, I'm having fun, and it's a nice break from an otherwise rainy Monday. I say it's worth it. My school may feel differently by the end of the day, but we aren't there yet. That's a future me problem.
