Be careful though. You may end up building a positive relationship with your students to the point where they just want to hang out with you during lunch. This is when it stops being a punishment and starts just being another fun part of your day. Use this wisely.

At campuses, like mine, that have so many kids getting in trouble and getting referrals that we literally aren't allowed to suspend or discipline anymore (or it's exceedingly difficult to), you have to get creative with consequences. One option is the lunch detention. Some students love their lunch. They don't eat because school lunch is "nasty" or "not cool," but what they do love about lunch is the ability to be social. There are students who come to school all day and don't go to a single class. They are here for their friends. Making them hang out with you during lunch is a fate worse than death.
