This is the least surprising, most surprising thing ever. No, that's not a typo.
The surprising thing isn't that this happens. The surprising thing is that we're still treating this like new information. The surprising thing is that we haven't done anything about it yet.
School discipline disproportionately affects Black children. Try as some people might, you can't use the "Black kids just misbehave more" argument. i don't need Yale and their eye tracking technology to tell me that teachers are hyper-aware of what their Black children are doing in their classrooms.
Bottom line, suspension on it's own doesn't do anything except give teachers a short break from the student they are tired of and put the student further behind which leads to more acting out, forcing more suspensions. It's not a tool, it's a white flag. Let's stop giving up on our kids and start talking to them.
