My day has turned around dramatically since this morning. I'm having a BLAST teaching. I'm not sure if anyone else in the class did work today because I got distracted and started talking to 3 female students about our school. I shared a little of my life in high school, telling them tales of how I used to sleep in math class and how I would stay up late doing my work instead. They thought it was funny and used that opportunity to get honest with me about their school life. Some highlights:
"More than anything, I just want mother daughter time. [My mom] comes home and just sleeps because she works so much. She never talks to me."
"We know how to act, but referrals don't do anything so when we feel like it, we do whatever we want."
"This school wouldn't be so bad if they didn't send all the bad kids from other places here."
"I like when you teach us in small groups. Sometimes you should let the kids that don't want to do anything do nothing and just teach the kids that want to learn."
Take some time to talk to your kids. They know much more than we give them credit for. You may learn a thing or to if you take the time to listen.
