Why do that to our kids though? What is the purpose of driving our students like factory workers in the classroom? Yes the school system we have today does have its roots in the Industrial Revolution and the factory system, but it doesn't have to be that way. In the same way that working out the same muscle vigorously every day can make it stronger, you also risk injuring that muscle, maybe beyond repair. I'm a firm believer that driving students without breaks day in and day out risks breaking them and burning them out. Work hard, but give them breaks too. Your DISD students need rest so they can wake up and keep learning. You get a planning period. Often times they only get lunch. Sometimes the reward they are looking for isn't candy or a game, it's a little time off.

I've always said that teachers are the first ones to work "bell to bell." You work from that first bell around 9am to that same bell 24 hours later. A teacher's work is never done. When we are away from our school, we take DISD home with us more times than not. Why? Because teachers care. They care to a fault sometimes. Teachers are more busy with paperwork than in the past so that is more true now than ever.
