Why is this working? The kids know me. Some of them do anyway. The ones that don't have seen me. Kids treat teachers better than most other people in the building with the exception of coaches. Why? I think there's some basic understanding that we are all in this together. We may not like each other, but we're here. That's the only way I can make sense of the terrible way subs get treated in DISD and other Dallas area school districts.
Another thing is that I can help with content. DISD basically requires that subs be 1. alive and 2. not a sex offender. That's a pretty low bar for subs. The quality of people in the room is generally low. Have I met subs that are capable of teaching content, managing a classroom, and being productive with the kids? Several. The problem is that I've met 5 times more that come in and get paid to stand there in case someone tries to kill someone to and administrators or the police need to be called. If I were Lord Commander of Dallas Independent School District, I'd raise the bar for subs.
That said, subs come into schools knowing this. They know they'll get disrespected. They know they are fighting an uphill battle. Thanks for coming and you have my utmost respect. That said, please make sure you have my kids do what I need them to do. I know a lot of it is on the kids. I know it's "not your job" to fight with the kids and force them to work. All I'm asking is that you try a little harder than walking in and sitting in my desk and doing nothing else. At least pass out the papers! Thanks.
