A Dallas Education Blog by Young Dallas Teachers
Creating safe places for our students to be outside of school is important. Libraries and parks can make a huge difference in the environment our students live in. Our children need safe and active communities. We are still only talking about an additional 2-4 hours per day though. Where are students really spending most of their time? At HOME. The attitude and culture in home environments needs to be education first. How can we expect students to focus on school when parents are not engaged in and participating in their education? I cannot speak for every parent, but for those that bring their child to school late, do not attend parent-teacher conferences, and only get upset when the truancy bill comes, what message is sent? By no means do I believe most parents do not care about their child’s success, but actions speak louder than words. We need to get parents engaged in their child’s learning. Will socials with food, information sessions in the evenings, day in the lives of a student, or home outreach programs work? What else can we do? I think it is time to get creative because what happens in the classroom is NOT enough to change a child’s trajectory.
