I serve because people served and continue to serve me. Everyone who has ever or will ever help me isn't doing because I'm so amazing. They are doing it because they are amazing. Do some people serve out of their own self interests? Absolutely, but if we all achieve greatness, that's good for everyone.
I applaud the Serve A Year campaign and its potential to usher in a whole new generation of people coming to communities they'd otherwise ignore, BUT I want to caution against created an new generation of tourists that come for a day, leave, and never think of it again.
Teaching is a job people do out of love. It's too hard and doesn't pay enough to do it for any other reason. DISD students can't read. Black DISD students are worse off than their peers and have been for decades. Some days I struggled getting out of bed because I know DISD is waiting for me just outside my door. Why do I keep doing it? Not because I have to, but because I get to, because I want to, because my children love me and I love them back. They need me. I need them. Bottom line.
TFA, City Year, Americorps, and every group in between, keep doing you and keep bringing people to the places that need it the most. This is a job that nobody actually wants to do anymore so you're doing important work. Let's encourage people to #servemorethanayear.
