Aesthetics and Schools

Have you ever been to a school that made you want to get back in your car and leave at first sight?

If the belief is that the campus is an open space where all people are invited to learn and grow together toward creating better students, people, and society, then both the website and school itself should reflect that. I’ve taught, volunteered, and attended schools that had mission statements that espoused values that were inconsistent with disciplinary processes, faculty expectations, or the overall aesthetics of the school. People are the beginning and the end of goals and values on the campus, so if people, whether they are strangers or on campus full time, they can only align to what they perceive. A campus in tatters doesn’t communicate that it is an inviting place that expects anything of the people inside.

There is no question that the way my building looks impacts my teaching and the learning of my students. That's why there's so much pressure on classroom decorations every year.
