Half of Monday Week 2 is in the books and some of my students are trying to push the envelope. They are doing so cautiously, but I can feel the resistance. A few small comments while other students are participating, a few kids off task here and there, and a couple technology issues that prevented homework being completed on time. These are small disruptions, but, left unchecked, these can turn into very big issues.
How have I been dealing with it?
I like to wait until week 2 to make seating charts so I can get to see how exactly they decide to group and how effective that is for them. I also make sure to let them know I hear them. Not in a sarcastic way, but in a way that calmly redirects them down the right path. Eventually will I take points off of their participation grade or something along those lines? Yes, but it shouldn't get that far. If it does, then I need to take a long look at myself before I decide to inflict punishment. Sometimes it's warranted, but I always start with me first, not them.
